When you hire an experienced contractor, the visible wall is maybe half of what you pay for. The rest is below grade and behind the face, and it determines the wall's lifespan.
Drainage is non-negotiable. We pair walls with proper drain lines because the two systems fail or survive together. Our PVC drainage systems carry a lifetime warranty, and corrugated lines carry a 1-year warranty, so the part of the project you will never see is the part with the strongest guarantee. More on that approach is on our drainage and erosion control page.
Base prep is the other silent decider. Excavating to undisturbed soil, compacting gravel in lifts, and burying the first course are slow, boring steps. Skipping them is how a wall settles unevenly and starts to lean in its second winter.
Accountability matters as much as technique. 4 Seasons has been building in North Atlanta since 2000, Nick supervises every job personally, and the company holds an A+ BBB rating. The builder who set your base is reachable at (678) 619-5236 years later, not a subcontractor nobody can name.
Material choice rounds it out. Segmental block, natural stone, and poured options each fit different budgets and looks. See examples and the full process on our retaining walls page.
One more thing experience buys: knowing when a wall needs more than a standard build. Taller walls, walls near driveways, and walls supporting structures can trigger engineering and permitting requirements that vary by county. An experienced contractor flags that early and prices it in, instead of springing it on you mid-project or, worse, skipping it.
